3-dimensional Old Dutch tiles. Tile cubes to play with, to build and to rattle. On these cubes are images of tiles from the early 17th century. These multicolored tiles were made in the Netherlands at the time that Delft blue specimens did not yet exist. The production technique, in which four colors are used, was taken over from southern Europe. Also many southern motifs, such as pomegranates and bunches of grapes, were originally used in the Netherlands. Later more Dutch elements were incorporated in the image, such as tulips and the Dutch Lion. On early tiles, the corner motifs played an equally important role as the central image. And only when you put four tiles together did the complete pattern appear. With the four fabric cubes stitched together you can make 6 different Old-Dutch tile panels.
