Literary ambitions
Mondrian's literary aspirations are practically unknown. In the now defunct weekly De Nieuwe Amsterdammer
in 1920 he publishes a short story that he calls 'futuristic'. That same year he also sends a story to the editors of De Nieuwe Gids . The response is appreciated, but Mondrian's story is not published until two years later due to lack of space. Since Mondrian thinks this is too long, he asks for his copy back. Because his visual work eventually gains the upper hand, he abandons his literary ambitions. The legacy of his literary foray has thus remained with two stories, 'De Groote Boulevards' and 'Klein Restaurant - Palmzondag', which were only published in book form in 1987, under the title Two stories .
