This stylish milk churn vase is decorated with lush Delft blue flowers, a dark blue lace pattern, and the elaborate, expensive chintz; these patterns had all kinds of applications, from clothing to wall decoration. The fabric is often printed with floral motifs and other patterns (e.g., animals) in various colors, usually on a light, solid background. It was the fashion of the 17th century; the fabric was enormously popular for use in traditional costume. In his younger years, Father Jaap Heinen often painted in the fishing harbor, where he painted porcelain vases and wall plates, but on request, he also painted pieces of traditional costume with graceful flowers resembling the chintz patterns.
